Clutter and rainfall discrimination by means of doppler-polarimetric measurements and vertical reflectivity profile analysis

The estimation of rainfall rate and other parameters from radar scattering volume is heavily affected by the presence of intense sea and ground clutter and echoes which appears in anomalous propagation condition. To deal with these non meteorological echoes we present a new clutter removal algorithm which combines the results of previous works. The algorithm fully exploits both the Doppler and ...

Quality Control of Radar Data to Improve Mesocyclone Detection

Real-time severe weather algorithms that are used to identify various storm attributes can be adversely affected by the presence of meteorological and non-meteorological contaminants such as anomalous propagation (AP), ground clutter (GC), clear-air return or biological scatters in the radar reflectivity data. We examine the Quality Control Neural Network, a new algorithm which classifies preci...

Anomalous Propagation Echo Detection Using Neural Network and Discrete Wavelet Transform

Anomalous propagation echo belongs to representative non-precipitation echoes which have very similar characteristics of precipitation echoes. It occurs due to superrefraction or ducting phenomenon of radar beam by temperature or humidity. There are a lot of ongoing researches about detecting and removing the anomalous propagation echo in radar data in order to improve accuracy of data analysis...

Correction of X-Band Radar Observation for Propagation Effects Based on the Self-Consistency Principle

New algorithms for rain attenuation correction of reflectivity factor and differential reflectivity are presented. Following the methodology suggested for the first time by Gorgucci et al., the new algorithms are developed based on the self-consistency principle, describing the interrelation between polarimetric measurements along the rain medium. There is an increasing interest in X-band radar...

Effects of Anomalous Propagation Conditions on Weather Radar Observations

The effect of atmospheric propagation on radar observations is an important topic both for radar application developers and end-users of radar products, particularly of weather radar systems. An excellent review of this subject is given by Patterson (2008), and most general books about weather radars have a chapter on the topic –see for example Battan (1973), Collier (1996), Doviak and Zrnic (2...
